Having studied coaching and completed projects on many aspects of coaching, I have chosen to quote from John Whitmore (Coaching for Performance) in relation to the real essence of coaching. This is how I would define coaching, and how it works, in a simplified manner:

| Develop Self-belief | = ‘Self-belief is built when we make decisions, take successful actions and recognise our full responsibility for both ’ |
| Generate Success | = ‘It is imperative to build a track record of successes. Nothing succeeds like success’ |
| Recognition | = ‘For people to build their self-belief, in addition to accumulating successes they need to know that their success is due to their own efforts’ |
